Why study an MSc in Public Health online? A student’s perspective

Explore Hiu Yan’s experience studying an online MSc in Public Health at King’s, from balancing work and study to developing new skills. 

Hiu Yan Pong is a current student on the King's online MSc in Public Health (Mental Health pathway). In this Q&A, she shares what inspired her to pursue the programme, her experience of studying online alongside work, the skills she has developed and her advice for prospective students.

Tell us about the moment you knew it was the right time to pursue this programme?

I had newly joined the Department of Health in Hong Kong and switched from training in Family Medicine to Public Health.

At that point, I considered this programme necessary to enrich my knowledge from a Public Health perspective, which would be helpful for my career development.

Describe your feelings right before starting your first module. What were your biggest hopes for the programme?

I was definitely feeling excited! I was really looking forward to meeting teachers from the UK and fellow classmates from all over the world with different backgrounds, and exchanging ideas with them. I was also looking forward to choosing the mental health pathway, which was the topic that interested me most.

How did you plan to manage your studies alongside your existing commitments? What was your strategy for the first few weeks?

Time management. I tried to finish my reading and tasks after work or during the weekends.

Can you recall a specific class, project, or interaction where you realised you were truly mastering a new skill or concept? Describe that moment.

The dissertation. I have further enhanced my skills in research, biostatistics, and critical thinking.

What was the single biggest challenge you faced during your studies, and what resources or person at the university helped you overcome it?

The need for self-discipline and independence. Thanks to my tutor Henriques Andela who has been providing support and guidance to me. The resources from King's Library have also helped a lot.

Describe the first time you directly applied a concept or skill from your programme to a problem in your career or daily life. What was the skill and what was the result?

Research skills, as my Public Health specialty exams require me to write four papers. I am currently still working on them.

If you could give a prospective student some encouragement or advice about starting this journey, what would it be?

Don't hesitate, as this programme provides a lot of flexibility for you. Time and place are no longer constraints.
