Discover how Sarah Bouhnik balanced full-time work with the King’s Marketing MSc and applied what she learned directly to her professional growth.
Sarah Bouhnik is a professional from Monaco. She spent six years within the Government of Monaco, beginning her career at the Interministerial Delegation for Digital Transformation before joining the Attractiveness Unit, contributing to the Monaco Private Label programme.
Alongside her full-time role, Sarah has earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, followed by a Master’s in Marketing from King’s College London, completed in 2023. She now works for Azura Partners, a global wealth management firm.
As a busy working professional, how did you manage your time and stay motivated while studying?
For me, mapping out time blocks was essential. During weeknights, I’d try to block out two hours each evening and I set aside Sundays to go through lessons. It can be challenging to do your studies alongside a full-time job but setting aside time helps.
There are also definite benefits to studying whilst working because you can apply what you’ve learnt in the classroom to real life situations.
Studying online is a bit like being an entrepreneur; you have the opportunity to manage your own time, but you need to be motivated and driven.
What was your favourite aspect about studying online?
I had two actually; the flexibility and networking in a different way.
Having started work, I really didn’t want to stop to return to return to education, so the online option appealed to me. The flexibility combined with my goals to rise in my career and have a better education meant the qualification was a great opportunity.
The aspect of online study that surprised me was how culturally rich learning with King’s was. I was exposed to different world views and learnt to network in a different way through online forums such as WhatsApp. Since Covid, these digital forums are commonly used to communicate and becoming more proficient in meeting people in this way felt like a skill in itself.
How did you apply the skills you were learning in your master’s to your day-to-day role?
The degree taught me how to think independently and communicate clearly which, as a young government employee, was an invaluable skill to develop. I also felt more confident asking questions because my colleagues knew I was a student and knew I was learning. I think previously, I was worried about asking “stupid questions” or them being perceived in this way.
Lastly, I think it helped me to become more mature because I had a sense of personal responsibility for my own development.
I also noticed people around me recognising that it’s impressive to study whilst working full time and when I was changing jobs, this was picked up as a positive quality.
And finally, what’s been your proudest achievement of your career to date?
I think for me it’s been the mindset shift that I got from my studies. When you’re studying alongside work you push yourself to challenge your understanding and to bring a different perspective. You can easily fall into the same habits at work but by learning concurrently, you start thinking outside the box and brining new ideas to the table.
This has helped me as I’ve moved from the public sector to the private sector too. It’s a different mindset and I’m now comfortable with shifting the way I think and approach tasks because I had to do it a lot during my degree.
