Dr Felipe Botelho Correa

Programme Director, Global Cultures MA

A Reader in Cultural Studies, Felipe joined King’s in 2013. He is the founding director of the online MA in Global Cultures, overseeing the development of this innovative programme, which was launched in 2021 as one of the first courses of its kind.

Originally born in Brazil, Felipe studied his bachelor’s and master's degrees in Rio de Janeiro before moving to the UK to undertake his Doctor of Philosophy at Oxford. He’s carried out extensive research on anti-racist practices in Brazil and other parts of the Global South.

Career highlights

  • Felipe obtained his BA in Media Studies and MPhil in Communication Studies at PUC-Rio (Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro) in Brazil. 
  • He was awarded a PhD in Modern Languages at the University of Oxford as a Clarendon Scholar in 2013. His doctoral research focused on the Afro-Brazilian writer Lima Barreto (1881-1922), a pioneering figure using literature and journalism to critique racism. 
  • Felipe previously held fellowships at Princeton University and National Autonomous University of Mexico. He’s spoken at various events, festivals, and academic institutions in the UK, USA, Mexico, Mozambique, and Brazil.He was the chief editor (2019-2022) the journal Brasiliana, he’s also the editor of Lima Barreto: Sátiras e outras subversões (Penguin, 2016) and Crônicas da Bruzundanga: a literatura militante de Lima Barreto (e-galaxia, 2017). 
  • He co-edited Magazines and Modernity in Brazil (Anthem Press, 2020). The book explores transnational topics ranging from architecture and cosmopolitanism to anti-war movements and visual artistic movements.
