Dr Juan Grigera

Programme Director, International Development MSc

A senior lecturer in international development, Juan joined King’s College London in 2018. His research has been focused on the social and economic impact of technological transformations including industrialisation, deindustrialisation, and more recently Artificial Intelligence. He currently supervises PhD students in the areas of the social and economic impact of Artificial Intelligence, and structural transformation and economic development of Latin America.

Investigating the role of cryptocurrencies in reshaping financial systems in the Global South, exploring their impact on monetary policies, financial stability, and global economic dynamics


Social conflict

Unraveling the interplay of local and global waves of social conflict and its reaching socioeconomic impact

Career highlights

  • Juan obtained a BA in History from the University of La Plata (UNLP, Argentina). He gained his MSc in Development Studies from the London School of Economics and Political Sciences (LSE, UK) in 2010. 
  • He completed a PhD from the University of Buenos Aires with support from CONICET (Argentina) in 2012. His doctoral research focused on the developmental impact of deindustrialisation in Argentina. 
  • As well as publishing widely himself, Juan is an active member of the editorial board of Historical Materialism (London, UK) journal and book series and Cuadernos de Economía Crítica (Buenos Aires, Argentina). 
  • He has authored and edited several publications. These include The Argentinian Dictatorship and its Legacy (Springer Nature Switzerland AG, 2019) and The Brazilian Economy – World Economies (Agenda Publishing, 2021). 
  • He is author of two forthcoming books, The diffusion of Artificial Intelligence (Cambridge University Press) and The Myth of Deindustrialisation in Argentina (Brill).
