Professor Michael Clinton

Professor of Work Psychology

Michael Clinton is Professor of Work Psychology at King's Business School. He first joined King’s College London over 20 years ago, and was made Head of the Human Resource Management & Employment Relations Department in 2022.

Michael’s academic interests are particularly centred on how employee wellbeing and effectiveness can be positively maintained in the long-term. His work is underpinned by psychological theories related to self-control and self-determination, as well as goal systems and the allocation of personal resources.

He has also conducted studies in several major UK organisations, including the Armed Services, the NHS, the Equality and Human Rights Commission and the Church of England. His research outputs have been published in many leading journals, including:

  • The Journal of Organizational Behavior  
  • The Journal of Occupational & Organizational Psychology
  • The Journal of Vocational Behavior
  • The Journal of Occupational Health Psychology
  • The Human Resource Management Journal 

Michael has also run short methods courses at King’s and the LSE on multivariate statistics, moderation and mediation, and structural equation modelling.

Research interests:

  • Longitudinal and daily diary research designs
  • The changing nature of modern work, its effect on worker wellbeing and effectiveness, and the relationship between them
  • Studies of the contradictions of hybrid working, vocational callings and self-sacrifice as double-edge swords
  • How demanding days at work impact overall employee wellbeing
