Balancing flexibility and excellence: online LLM programs at King's
I'm Doctor. Nat Kelleher, and I, lecture on campus. We also teach, online, so on campus, I teach, banking law and fintech, the law and policy of fintech.
And online, I have two modules, financial products and financial risk and regulation.
And, and research wise, I research macro prudential policy, the use of AI my name my name is Katie Hart.
I am the online programs manager. I am responsible for the online programs team, and we manage the day to day running of all online programmes at the Dixon Poon School of Law at King's College London. Welcome to all.
It is a very, supportive place and and we've been running online programs for for a very long time, many, many years before the COVID nineteen crisis forced us all to to sometimes move online. So, we've always searched for ways to, reproduce best features of on campus on campus experience as effectively as possible and blend them with the benefits and the flexibility of the online, format.
Other programs may not offer things like webinars and close interaction with module lecturers.
These webinars, they they actively encourage you an open discussion, fluent interaction, both with, the academics that teach you, delivering the module with other students. And and it really creates that sense of community I mentioned before.
And above all, the the law school at King's has a distinguished reputation in law. It is well connected with industry.
And this also means that some of some of the modules may be taught by practitioners.
You will be able to learn from world leading academics as well as legal legal professionals, who will provide you with cutting edge, legal teaching, in an intellectually rigorous, stimulating environment. So I think King's is an exciting place to be.
When it comes for you to graduate and obtain your final degree, it will not say online on your final degree. A King's online degree, degree, the actual certificate looks exactly the same as if you were studying on campus because as Anat has said, we believe that our qualifications carry equal weight to an on campus degree. And that's to reflect the commitment to excellence that our students make and to the the LLM, but we also have a student support team that are available to answer any questions that students might have concerning progression.
On the online, we recognize that the majority of the students on our programs are working professionals, whether that's in the legal field or not. And so there's a need to balance the degree around their family and their personal life that maybe can't be said from all on campus students because the online LLM is a part time, LLM. So we have developed this flexible delivery method, and we've modeled it on our student profile. So an example of this might be that, you know, every module is broken up week by week.
Our students are given ample time to complete assessments. Assessments are not like they are on campus where you might come in and sit in a large hall to complete an exam. We understand that you might have work, you might have family, you might have caring responsibilities. There's a million different things.
So we make sure that you have enough time over the course of a week to complete the assessment university in person either for your studies.
In terms of academic support in our programs, we have weekly live webinars, with lectures. And if for some reason you cannot attend a live webinar, the recording of the session is made available at the same day.
If you have any questions or would like additional feedback on your work, for instance, You can reach out to your module lecturer.
If necessary, you can also arrange a Teams school to discuss any questions that you have or if if you want to have further feedback on your work. We also have discussion forums that allow you to interact, to exchange ideas, to collaborate with your peers. As to the content of the modules, that's available on an online platform, and that provides you access to to our teaching materials and activities that could include, for instance, a combination of videos, audio recordings, discussion forums, it could be independent research, quizzes, inter other interactive tasks.
We've also designed an online programs hub that students can access twenty fourseven, and this is specifically designed for our online programs cohort. And this is a space where you can find resources that range from, IT services, from guidance using the library, when you're an online student, to how to access, support services like counselling for example, which are still all available to students even if you're not based in the UK.
